We got up at 8am for a 9am pick up
by a driver we organised yesterday to take us to Ubud and show us around for only $40 for all 4 of us from 9am to 8pm. Our driver is called 'Katut' which reminds me of the movie 'Eat Prey, Love'.
Our first stop was at 'UC Silver' where they shows us the production line of people making silver and gold jewelry. The attention to detail that these people use is incredible. It is my first sweat shop experience seeing the start of the ring being made to the final product. The people making the jewelry were not phased at all by us being there. We end at the beautiful jewelry shop, but it's a weird feeling seeing the conditions the workers are put through for the final expensive result. We didn't buy anything because it was all a bit pricy but we saw some amazing rings, necklaces, ornaments and deer horns. This was a cool experience to see first hand how jewelry is made.
We went to a Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary for $2 each. We honestly saw like 150 monkeys all playing, eating and mucking around. They are such cute little characters. James accidentally stood on one and one jumped on Ben after I took a picture of him - i screamed and ran away, haha.
This place is awesome with all the monkeys, the beautiful jungle and some cool temples!
We visited the Kings Temple which had some cool statues but it was a pretty small and didn't have much going on.
We went to the markets next to the temple and looked around, they had everything - sunglasses, paintings, coasters, fruit, surongs the lot.
We learnt that school for children starts at 8am and finishes at 12:30pm Monday to Saturday and they study 1hr of English a week.
We went for some lunch where the restaurant was on a field of rice paddys which was so beautiful, we definitely felt amongst the Balinese culture. Katie and I got steamed veggies with satay sauce which was yummy and James and Ben had a coconut curry.
The next spot on the tour was 'Tanah Lot' which cost $3 but was well worth it as you got to see a huge temple out on the sea and the beautiful coastline of Bali. It was stunning, and there were so many people donating fruits and different kinds of foods up to the temple. It was built in the 15th century as a shrine to worship the Balinese sea gods.
We saw the famous 'Kerobokan Prision' and I got a photo of Ben and Janes in front of it! Wow so surreal being her. A hell on earth for people. Its crazy because there are shops built around it, the people will be able to listen to the outside world so clearly.
We went back to our hostel for a swim and a bit of downtime as it had been
a full on day.
We went to an area called 'Jimbaran' to watch the sunset. You can sit at a restaurant on the beach and eat some expensive seafood, but we didn't want to spend ridiculous amounts of money on dinner, so we got our driver to take us to Seninyak where we went to our favourite place 'Rumours' and it was an amazing dinner. The boys meal was the star attraction of he night - they got beef stew on potato mash in a puff pastry pie - it was magnificent that we are all coming back tomorrow to get it! We are obsessed with this restaurant. 4 people for 2x beers, entrees, mains and desserts was $50 in total!!!
Such a great day sightseeing but we are all shattered!
